Evolution of the world-record EF-5 El Reno, Oklahoma tornado on May 31, 2013

Storm chasers Gabe Garfield, Tim Marquis, Amy Edmonds and Logan Karsten documented the evolution of a massive multi-vortex-to-wedge tornado on May 31, 2013. The tornado and its very dangerous parent thunderstorm complex was responsible for considerable damage to life and property in the Oklahoma City metro and surrounding communities. The extremely large wedge tornado maxed out a size of at least 2.6 miles, making it the largest ever recorded in North America; it was also given a rating of EF-5, the highest on the Enhanced Fujita scale. Sadly, this was also the same tornado that took the lives of our friends and fellow chasers Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras and Carl Young, as well as at least 15 others.
