Dramatic video of ice floes on the rivers and creeks of western Pennsylvania on January 12, 2018, including the Allegheny River at East Brady, PA; where evacuations of flood-prone homes along the river were reported. These ice jams are most common when a major cold snap is followed by a rapid warm up and heavy rainfall. The river develops thick ice cover during the cold snap, and then, when the river levels rise during the subsequent thaw, the ice fractures and massive chunks are transported downstream.
